I only work to play.
Autotelic:
Meaning: A modern term derived from the Greek words "auto-" (self) and "telos" (goal or end), "autotelic" describes an activity or a state where the goal is self-contained. An autotelic activity is rewarding in itself; the process of doing it provides intrinsic satisfaction and motivation, independent of external rewards or outcomes.
This is the reason why I continue to play.
In the unfolding story of The Brown Wall Series, each year is a distinct chapter, defined by its unique approach to the art of capturing nature. The 2022 collection, "Fortuity," celebrates serendipitous beauty, showcasing the unexpected and lush splendor of roses and peonies that nature presented. It was a year marked by the joy of discovery, where chance encounters with the natural world yielded breathtaking moments frozen in time.
Transitioning into building the 2023 collection, the narrative deepened with "Deliberation." Here, the focus shifted as the blooms were less lavish, prompting a conscious shift in creativity. This period was characterized by a meticulous exploration of light and shadow, the deliberate selection of materials and props, and a thoughtful engagement with the photographic process. It was a year of mastering the elements, crafting each image with the precision and depth reminiscent of the aura surrounding Dutch master paintings.
‘"Fortuity" refers to the quality or state of being accidental or governed by chance. It's often used to describe a circumstance or an event that happens unexpectedly and by chance, rather than by design or intention.’
It was also the title of our first collection of photographs gathered into the 2022 calendar. It began with an amazing rose bloom season in May of that year. Even while the roses bloomed, Seattle’s “grey days” continued through June of that year.
In the early photos, you can see items like the electrical plug for the coffee maker or a light switch in these early photographs. Still, the quality of light affected the brown wall in my home office created a surprising atmosphere which featured that abundance of flowers in a spontaneous, rich composition, combining a sense of natural wildness with a deep, resonant beauty.
